BEFORE I WAS

BEFORE I WAS BORN,
WHERE WAS I?
I WAS FLOATING IN MY MAMA’S BRAIN
LIKE A SECRET WISH.
I WAS ROLLING BETWEEN MY TATA’S TEETH
LIKE A TOOTHPICK.

WHEN I WAS BORN,
I LEARNED WHAT IT MEANT
TO BE LOVED SO COMPLETELY
THAT I WAS SWADDLED IN IT.

WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED,
I SAW FEAR AND SADNESS
INFECT MY PARENTS
LIKE A CANCER.

WHEN I WAS TEN,
WONDERFUL PEOPLE GAVE ME MEMORIES
OF LAUGHTER AND FUN.

WHEN I WAS THIRTEEN, I FOUND MY TRIBE.
THEY WERE FROM ALL OVER,
AND DID NOT SHARE A LAST NAME.
ALTHOUGH WE ARE NOT RELATED,
WE HAVE THE SAME BLOOD.

WHEN I AM OLDER,
I WILL OPEN MY HOME TO THEM,
AND WE WILL SIT AND TALK ABOUT LIFE.
